Former Super Eagles captain Segun Odegbami believes Nigeria can overcome hosts Morocco in Wednesday’s AFCON 2025 semi-final in Rabat, citing the team’s confidence and attacking prowess as key advantages.
Nigeria faces Morocco at the 70,000-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium at 8 p.m. Nigerian time, with Odegbami expressing strong optimism following the Eagles’ commanding 2-0 quarter-final victory over Algeria.
The 1980 AFCON winner said the performance against Algeria rekindled memories of Nigeria’s historic dominance four decades ago when they defeated the same opponents 3-0.
“It felt like March 22, 1980, all over again. History was echoing loudly in my head,” Odegbami said, praising the current team’s authority, speed and total control.
He described how Nigeria dominated Algeria from the opening whistle, with the North Africans barely threatening until the 80th minute. “They came out flying, dominating every department. Algeria were left confused, frustrated and searching for answers that never came,” the former winger noted.
Odegbami, who earned 46 caps and scored 23 goals for Nigeria, said the display has reignited his belief in the national team. “These Eagles have awakened my once-waning spirit. They are growing, game by game.”
Looking ahead to Morocco, he acknowledged the challenge of playing in Rabat, where the hosts will enjoy massive crowd support. “They will have a 12th player, a loud army of supporters pushing them forward,” Odegbami said.
However, he remains confident Nigeria’s cohesion and attacking rhythm will prove decisive. “These Eagles are primed and ready. They have the tools to do the impossible. They are creating chances freely and finishing with conviction. That is championship football.”
Odegbami concluded with a bold prediction: “I see these Eagles soaring over the Atlas Mountains and writing another glorious chapter.”
