A Cameroonian football activist has voiced serious concerns about the conduct of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Morocco, questioning officiating standards and administrative decisions under CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s leadership.
Ngam Cletus, in a statement shared on social media, expressed disappointment with aspects of the Morocco-hosted competition, calling it problematic despite what he acknowledged as a promising start featuring 24 participating nations. He raised concerns about what he characterized as questionable refereeing and procedural issues that emerged during the tournament.
The activist highlighted several matches where he believes officiating decisions were contentious. These include Morocco’s group match against Tanzania, where he claims a penalty should have been awarded to the visiting team, and the Morocco-Cameroon fixture, where he alleges VAR technology was unavailable, affecting the match outcome. He also referenced the Morocco-Nigeria semi-final, suggesting fouls against Nigerian players were not appropriately sanctioned.
Cletus claimed that multiple national football associations, including those of Algeria and Nigeria, have reportedly submitted formal complaints to CAF regarding officiating decisions, with copies sent to FIFA. He also alleged that referee appointments became a point of controversy, particularly in matches involving Cameroon.
Regarding the upcoming final, the activist stated that Senegal’s delegation has reportedly encountered logistical challenges in Morocco, including accommodation and security concerns during training. He claims the Senegalese Football Federation has communicated these issues to both CAF and FIFA.
At a pre-match press conference, Cletus alleged that Senegal’s coaching staff expressed concerns about ensuring fair conditions for the final.
CAF has not issued a public response to these allegations. The AFCON 2025 final between Morocco and Senegal is set for Sunday, January 18, 2026, at 8:00 p.m.
