Governor Alex Otti has announced that exceptional National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Abia State will receive automatic employment opportunities upon completion of their service year.
The governor made this commitment during the swearing-in of 1,820 corps members (804 males and 1,016 females) from the 2026 Batch ‘A’, Stream 1 at the NYSC orientation camp in Umunna, Bende Local Government Area.
Otti emphasized that Abia prioritizes excellence and merit over ethnicity in its employment practices. “We will monitor your performance at your primary assignments, and those who demonstrate outstanding service will secure positions in relevant public sector institutions,” he stated.
To illustrate the state’s commitment to this policy, the governor referenced Mr Benson Ojeikere, Abia’s current Head of Service, who originally served as a corps member from Edo State and advanced to become the state’s top civil servant through merit.
The governor encouraged corps members to maximize their service year, noting that his administration is building infrastructure to attract and retain talented individuals. He reaffirmed support for the NYSC program and instructed the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, to initiate Phase II improvements at the camp, including road completion, pavilion upgrades, and sports field renovation.
Commissioner Ananaba urged corps members to adhere to camp regulations and engage seriously with the orientation program, acknowledging the governor’s efforts to increase monthly allowances and enhance camp conditions.
State Coordinator Barr. Gladys Adama, representing the NYSC Director-General, praised Governor Otti’s sustained support, which includes camp rehabilitation, infrastructure development, installation of 46 solar street lights, improved meals, and enhanced state allowances.
Justice C.E. Anyim, representing Chief Judge Justice Lilian Agbai, administered the oath of allegiance to the new corps members.
