The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a motion of urgent public importance following a series of deadly bandit raids in Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State that claimed at least six lives, resulted in 20 abductions, and destroyed property valued at millions of naira.
Representative Bello Kumo, who sponsored the motion, highlighted coordinated assaults on Garin Galadima, Pindiga, Garin Jaji, Laro, and neighboring communities that have sparked widespread panic, forced mass displacement, and devastated local economies.
During plenary in Abuja, Kumo emphasized that the violence has driven numerous residents from their homes, intensifying humanitarian challenges and escalating insecurity across the region.
The legislator characterized the incidents as a stark illustration of the escalating threat armed banditry poses to national security, underlining that protecting citizens’ safety and well-being is government’s fundamental duty under the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
“The persistent killings, kidnappings, and property destruction in Akko communities highlight the critical need for swift and unified security measures to safeguard innocent Nigerians,” lawmakers stated.
In passing the motion, the House called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North East Development Commission (NEDC) to immediately dispatch relief materials to victims and displaced persons in affected areas.
Representatives also urged President Bola Tinubu to direct the Chief of Defence Staff to launch a comprehensive joint security operation—incorporating aerial surveillance and ground forces—to eliminate the bandits and destroy their camps to prevent additional attacks.
