A Nigerian court has dismissed a lawsuit filed by actress Adunni Ade against Google over online publications that falsely linked her romantically to former Kogi West Senator Dino Melaye.
The actress had approached the court, arguing that the reports, which appeared in search results, were defamatory and had seriously damaged her reputation. She maintained that the publications invaded her privacy, subjected her to public embarrassment and caused her significant emotional distress.
In her suit, Adunni Ade asked the court to compel Google to remove the offending publications from its search platform. She also sought monetary compensation for the alleged harm caused by the reports.
The case centred on whether Google, as a search engine operator, could be held legally responsible for content published by third-party websites that appeared in its search results.
After considering the arguments presented, the court dismissed the actress’s claims against Google, ruling that the company was not liable under the circumstances of the case.
The judgment highlights the legal challenges surrounding the responsibility of search engines for content created and published by independent websites, particularly in cases involving allegations of defamation.
While the lawsuit against Google was unsuccessful, the ruling does not prevent individuals from taking legal action against the original publishers of defamatory content where appropriate under Nigerian law.
