Dangote Cement Plc has introduced its Safety FairPlay Initiative at the Ibese Plant in Ogun State, launching a comprehensive program designed to reshape workplace safety behavior and establish a robust safety culture among its workforce.
The program, set to roll out across all Dangote Cement facilities nationwide following the Ibese pilot, represents a major step forward in the company’s safety management approach. The launch drew significant participation from both leadership and staff, reflecting widespread buy-in for enhanced workplace safety standards.
Safety FairPlay operates on a transparent framework built around three fundamental pillars: Recognition, Correction (Coaching), and Discipline. The initiative rewards employees who demonstrate exemplary safety practices, addresses risky behaviors consistently through coaching, and creates an environment where workers feel comfortable reporting incidents, near-misses, and mistakes without fear.
At the launch event, Dangote Cement’s Technical Director, Mr. Anandam Duraisamy, highlighted the program’s strategic significance and urged employees to embrace a safety culture grounded in fairness, accountability, recognition, and ongoing improvement.
Duraisamy characterized Safety FairPlay as a pivotal development in creating a workplace where safety transcends policy documents to become an ingrained mindset and everyday practice.
“We are launching an initiative that will transform not just our actions, but our fundamental approach to thinking about and responding to safety matters,” he stated.
“Safety FairPlay establishes trust, consistency, and accountability in safety management. When employees see that safe practices are celebrated, dangerous behaviors are addressed fairly, and everyone receives equal treatment, safety evolves from a requirement into a collective responsibility embedded in our culture.
“This program acknowledges that genuine safety excellence extends beyond machinery, protocols, or regulatory compliance—it starts with people, with our mindsets, our decisions, and our commitment to protecting one another.
“Every avoided incident, every identified hazard, and every safe choice made reinforces our organization. That reinforcement comes from you—from every team member accepting safety as both a personal duty and a shared value.”
Meanwhile, Ibese Plant’s Head of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE), Mr. Elvis Akalusi, praised Dangote Cement’s leadership for championing the initiative and commended workers for their strong embrace of the program.
He confirmed that Safety FairPlay would be integrated into all aspects of daily plant operations, with full support from departmental leaders.
“This initiative equips us with the resources, guidance, recognition, and accountability mechanisms necessary for making safer choices. Yet its effectiveness hinges on our collective dedication—our willingness to consistently act with integrity, regardless of supervision,” Akalusi explained.
