Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended fellow senators on Tuesday following an appellate court ruling that validated the six-month suspension imposed on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan in March 2025.
Speaking at an emergency plenary session, Akpabio emphasized the importance of maintaining order within the legislative chamber after the Court of Appeal in Abuja affirmed the Senate’s constitutional authority to discipline its members.
The three-judge panel unanimously ruled that the suspension—imposed over allegations of misconduct—did not violate Akpoti-Uduaghan’s parliamentary privileges or constitutional rights.
“Your rules derive from the Nigerian Constitution, and the Standing Orders of the Senate must always be adhered to,” Akpabio told senators. “Any community without law and order will live in anarchy.”
He added that the court’s decision judicially confirmed the Senate’s disciplinary powers, noting that the judiciary recognized lawmakers’ authority to sanction erring government officials.
“Congratulations, and we also applaud the judiciary for their firmness,” Akpabio concluded.
