A fire swept through an OPay office on Akala Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday afternoon, causing damage estimated at millions of naira and sparking alarm among area residents and businesses.
The blaze erupted suddenly at the fintech company’s premises, sending thick plumes of smoke and flames into the air and drawing crowds of concerned onlookers along the busy expressway.
According to witnesses, the fire spread quickly after it started. Some nearby residents initially thought the smoke was from a generator before realizing a building was ablaze.
“People began shouting and running once they saw the smoke,” one witness recounted. “The fire grew stronger very fast, and everyone became frightened.”
Staff from neighboring offices raised the alarm, prompting a rapid response from the Oyo State Fire Services Agency. Firefighters managed to contain the flames and prevent them from reaching adjacent structures and shops.
Security personnel cordoned off the area and directed traffic as the expressway experienced temporary disruptions during the emergency response.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, authorities confirmed there were no fatalities. Staff members had evacuated safely before the situation worsened, and no serious injuries were reported.
The fire destroyed office equipment, furniture, documents, and other assets. Some employees were observed retrieving salvageable items once firefighters had extinguished the blaze.
Fire service officials said an investigation is underway to determine what sparked the incident and to evaluate the total damage. They pledged to recommend preventive measures based on their findings.
OPay has yet to release an official statement regarding the fire or outline how it plans to maintain services for customers across Ibadan and Oyo State.
Local residents and business owners have urged authorities to tighten fire safety regulations and conduct regular inspections of commercial properties, especially those situated on major roads.
