At least 30 miners have lost their lives and 25 others are receiving hospital treatment following a devastating carbon monoxide poisoning incident at an underground mining site in Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State.
The tragedy, which occurred on Wednesday, claimed mostly young men between the ages of 20 and 35, who collapsed during routine operations after toxic gas accumulated in poorly ventilated tunnels beneath the mining site.
Haruna Safiyanu, a miner in Wase, confirmed to reporters that the dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide in inadequately ventilated underground passages triggered the sudden mass collapse of workers. Several of those hospitalised are reported to be in critical condition and are currently being treated at a nearby primary health centre.
Rescue teams, working alongside mining site personnel, swiftly cordoned off the affected area and evacuated survivors for emergency medical care. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the gas buildup and are taking measures to prevent a recurrence of such an incident.
