Women from the Angwan Rukuba community in Plateau State on Tuesday staged a protest that disrupted a planned mass burial for victims of a recent attack in the area.
The demonstrators, who were seen carrying leaves and chanting, took to the streets in opposition to the arrest of three youths by military authorities. The arrests were reportedly linked to ongoing investigations into the deadly incident that occurred last Sunday.
According to local accounts, the protest was driven by demands for the immediate release of the detained youths. Tensions escalated as both women and youths blocked access to the church where the burial ceremony was scheduled, insisting that the interment would not proceed until clarity was provided بشأن the detainees’ status.
The standoff created a charged atmosphere, as grieving families and community members gathered for the burial of those killed in the attack.
The protest comes days after suspected bandits or ethnic militia carried out a violent assault on the Angwan Rukuba community, leaving several residents dead and drawing nationwide concern.
In response to the killings, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu visited Plateau State, where he met with key stakeholders and pledged enhanced security measures. He also announced plans to deploy 5,000 AI-powered CCTV cameras to improve round-the-clock surveillance across the state.
Security presence in the affected communities has since been reinforced, with troops of the Nigerian Army carrying out patrols. During one such operation, a suspect was reportedly arrested and an AK-47 rifle recovered.
