Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has revealed that the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, told him that he regularly prayed for him and believed he would triumph.
Sowore disclosed this during an interview on the Naija Unfiltered Podcast, where he recounted his recent meeting with the respected cleric at the RCCG national headquarters in Ebute-Metta, Lagos.
According to the activist, Adeboye told him that he knew him well, regularly prayed for him and believed his conduct was sincere.
Sowore’s revelation came about a week after he attended the church’s National Thanksgiving Service, where he also disclosed that Adeboye had offered to pray for him during a private meeting.
Recounting the encounter, the AAC presidential candidate said the cleric recognised him and reminded him that he had been praying for him over the years.
“He said to me, ‘You know, I know you very well, and I pray for you all the time, and I know your ways are pure, and that you will triumph,’” Sowore recalled.
He explained that after the thanksgiving service, he was initially asked to wait near Adeboye’s car. However, he was later informed that the cleric wanted to meet him inside the church’s vestry.
During their conversation, the two men also revisited their first meeting in 1996, when Sowore approached Adeboye for support in a campaign against cultism in Nigerian universities.
Sowore said he had visited the cleric after completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme to seek assistance in addressing the growing problem of cult activities on university campuses.
According to him, Adeboye supported the campaign and instructed that ₦10,000 be given to him to help fund the initiative.
“We used it to go and campaign against cultism,” Sowore said, recalling how the financial support helped his efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of cultism among students.
The activist further disclosed that during their recent meeting, Adeboye asked for his permission to pray for him. Sowore agreed but told the cleric that he would keep his eyes open during the prayer.
He said Adeboye subsequently prayed for him, after which they both stood up and laughed.
“So he did pray for me, and we stood up, and we laughed,” he added.
Sowore Speaks on Religion
During the podcast interview, Sowore was also asked whether he had given his life to Christ during his encounter with the RCCG leader.
In response, he explained that the conversation did not involve such a discussion because he does not identify with organised religion.
“We didn’t have that kind of conversation because giving life to Christ is for people who are into organised religion. I am not into organised religion,” he said.
Sowore also clarified that he did not discuss his presidential ambition with Adeboye during the meeting.
He described their encounter as a personal conversation, noting that part of the discussion centred on their longstanding relationship and their first meeting nearly three decades ago.
The account has brought renewed attention to the relationship between the outspoken political activist and the RCCG leader, particularly given their differing public approaches to religion and politics.
Sowore is a former presidential candidate and a prominent human rights activist known for his criticism of successive Nigerian governments and his calls for political and institutional reforms. Adeboye, meanwhile, leads one of Nigeria’s largest Pentecostal Christian denominations.
