The House of Representatives has called for the immediate arrest, investigation, and prosecution of individuals responsible for a deadly farmers-herders conflict in Lanzai and neighbouring Dosho communities in Darazo Local Government Area of Bauchi State, where at least nine people lost their lives.

The lawmakers made the demand on Wednesday during plenary following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance moved by the member representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency, Mansur Manu Soro.

Presenting the motion, Soro informed the House that a violent confrontation between farmers and herders erupted in the affected communities last Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction, fatalities, and displacement.

According to him, the clash claimed nine lives, injured several residents, destroyed property, and led to the burning of about 50 residential huts alongside other means of livelihood.

“The House notes the unfortunate violent clash between farmers and herders in Lanzai and nearby Dosho communities, which resulted in the loss of nine lives, injuries to residents, destruction of property, and the burning of approximately fifty residential huts and other sources of livelihood,” he stated.

The lawmaker expressed concern over the humanitarian consequences of the violence, noting that many families had been forced to flee their homes. He added that women, children, and elderly persons were now facing severe hardship in displacement.

Members of the House also raised concerns about the recurring nature of farmers-herders conflicts across Nigeria, warning that the persistent violence poses serious threats to national security, agricultural production, and economic growth.

The lawmakers observed that repeated clashes between farming and pastoral communities continue to undermine food security, displace rural populations, and worsen tensions in affected areas.

As part of its resolutions, the House urged the Inspector-General of Police to deploy adequate security, intelligence, and investigative resources to the affected communities to identify, apprehend, and prosecute all perpetrators of the violence.

It also called on the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) to strengthen intelligence gathering, threat assessment, and early-warning mechanisms in the area to prevent further attacks and retaliatory violence.

Acknowledging the suffering of victims, the House appealed to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) to provide immediate humanitarian assistance, including food supplies, temporary shelter, medical care, relief materials, and psychosocial support.

The lawmakers further urged the Federal Government, through the NEDC, to assist in rebuilding homes, community infrastructure, and livelihoods destroyed during the crisis.

To address the root causes of the recurring conflicts, the House called on the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to accelerate the implementation of sustainable livestock management policies, ranching programmes, grazing control measures, and effective dispute-resolution frameworks.

The House subsequently mandated its Committees on Police Affairs, National Security and Intelligence, Emergency and Disaster Preparedness, and the North-East Development Commission to monitor the implementation of its resolutions and report back within six weeks.

Farmers-herders clashes remain one of Nigeria’s most persistent security and socio-economic challenges, particularly in rural communities where disputes over land ownership, grazing routes, and access to water resources often escalate into violence. The conflicts have resulted in loss of lives, displacement of communities, and disruptions to farming activities, raising growing concerns about their impact on national food security and rural development.
