Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has dismissed long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding the death of former Nigerian military Head of State, General Sani Abacha, maintaining that evidence gathered during investigations pointed to a heart attack as the cause of his death.

Speaking about his newly released book during an appearance on TVC News’ Breakfast Show, Amachree said many of the narratives that have circulated since Abacha’s sudden death on June 8, 1998, were based on assumptions rather than verified facts.

According to him, numerous individuals had offered differing explanations over the years despite having no direct access to the findings of the official investigation.

He noted that many observers merely interpreted events from the outside and arrived at conclusions without concrete evidence.

Amachree stressed that some people had even claimed specific incidents led to Abacha’s death, despite lacking the medical expertise required to make such determinations.

Providing insight into the investigation, the former DSS official revealed that authorities questioned a woman who was reportedly with the late military ruler shortly before his death. He described her account as the only firsthand testimony of the events that occurred in the room at the time.

He explained that the woman had arrived at the residence alongside her sister, who was said to have known Abacha personally.

Recalling the interrogation, Amachree said the woman immediately declared her innocence upon entering his office.

“The first thing she said was, ‘I did not kill him,’” he recounted, adding that her statement was delivered without hesitation.

The former DSS director stated that after extensive questioning, he found no reason to doubt her version of events. He said the atmosphere during the interview was not intimidating and that the witness appeared forthcoming throughout the process.

According to Amachree, the woman’s testimony remained particularly important because she was the only person present with Abacha at the time of the incident.

Based on her account and the findings of the investigation, he said he became convinced that the former Head of State died from natural causes.

He explained that the woman did not initially realize Abacha had died while they were together but later became aware that something had gone wrong.

“From everything I gathered during the investigation and from her account, I strongly believe it was a heart attack,” Amachree stated.

Abacha’s death while serving as Nigeria’s military leader remains one of the most debated events in the country’s political history. Nearly three decades later, speculation continues to surround the circumstances of his passing, despite repeated claims from some former officials that there was no foul play involved.
