The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has commenced Operation Clean Sweep III in Katsina State following the death of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar while in the custody of bandits.
The renewed military offensive is being conducted across Matazu Local Government Area and surrounding communities as security forces intensify efforts to track down those responsible for the retired officer’s abduction and death.
According to a statement issued on Monday by the Media Information Officer of Joint Task Force North-West under Operation Fansan Yamma, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, troops have already embarked on aggressive fighting patrols, intelligence-led raids, cordon-and-search missions, and clearance operations targeting known criminal hideouts.
Danja stated that the operation, which began on June 14, 2026, is aimed at neutralising the bandits involved in the incident and dismantling their support networks operating within the region.
The military reported notable successes in areas around Dikkawa Hills, Adua, Nasarawa and Karaduwa, where several terrorist camps, logistics bases and other operational facilities were destroyed during ongoing operations.
Meanwhile, a delegation from the Defence Headquarters on Sunday paid condolence visits to both the family of the late Major General Abubakar and the Katsina State Government.
The delegation was led by the Chief of Administration (Army), Major General I.M. Abdullahi, who conveyed the sympathies of the Chief of Defence Staff, General O.O. Oluyede, and the Armed Forces of Nigeria to the bereaved family and the people of Katsina State.
Speaking during the visit to the family residence in Katsina, Abdullahi described the late military officer as a committed patriot who served the nation with distinction throughout his career.
He noted that the deceased made significant contributions to the growth of the Nigerian Army and the country’s security framework, adding that his service and dedication to national duty would be remembered.
