A confrontation between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) disrupted activities at Unit 4, Ward 2, Ilawe Ekiti, during Saturday’s governorship election in Ekiti State over allegations of vote buying.
The incident briefly unsettled the polling area and reportedly escalated into a physical clash, leaving an ADC supporter injured and requiring medical treatment.
ADC governorship candidate, Dare Bejide, who cast his vote at the polling unit, accused some politicians of attempting to induce voters with cash before being challenged by party supporters.
According to Bejide, the situation became tense after individuals allegedly arrived at the polling area with money intended for distribution to voters. He further claimed that a prominent APC leader drove into the vicinity in a Toyota Jeep carrying a large amount of cash allegedly meant for voters.
The ADC candidate said the allegations sparked a heated exchange between supporters of both parties, which later degenerated into a fracas.
Bejide alleged that money was brought to the area in a sack and that efforts to retrieve it led to the commotion. He also dismissed claims that ADC members were involved in vote buying, insisting that no evidence was presented against his party.
The clash reportedly turned violent, with one ADC supporter sustaining a head injury. Eyewitnesses said the victim was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Bejide identified the injured individual as one of his aides and alleged that security personnel attached to his political opponents were responsible for the assault.
Despite the disturbance, the ADC candidate commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the conduct of the election, describing electoral officials as professional and diligent.
He noted that accreditation and voting processes were progressing smoothly and praised INEC personnel for maintaining order at the polling unit.
Following the restoration of calm, voting continued uninterrupted while security operatives remained on ground to monitor the area and prevent further disturbances.
