The Federal Government has approved a reviewed Scheme of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), a move designed to strengthen the agency’s career structure and improve staff welfare.
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) conveyed the approval to NiMet Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, in a letter dated July 9, 2026. An official signing on behalf of the Director of Organisation Design and Development sent the letter, titled “Re-Approval and Forwarding of the Reviewed Schemes of Service for the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet).”
The letter said the review followed preliminary engagements and an extensive field study, carried out under the approved Standard Operating Procedure for reviewing Schemes of Service.
According to the letter, the government undertook the review to align NiMet’s Scheme of Service with current developments in the Federal Public Service, close gaps in some professional cadres, strengthen career progression for staff, and reflect the agency’s specialised mandate as Nigeria’s apex meteorological institution.
The approved scheme gives the agency a clearer career structure by grouping staff into Junior, Intermediate and Professional/Officer cadre categories, in line with existing public service policy. It also accommodates NiMet’s specialised professional cadres while keeping the agency consistent with approved Schemes of Service across the Federal Public Service.
The government has directed NiMet to strictly implement the new scheme, in line with Public Service Rules, establishment circulars, and other regulations covering appointments, promotions, career progression, conversions and related personnel matters.
The letter also stated that officers in the Junior and Intermediate cadres can only progress beyond their terminal grade after they obtain the prescribed bachelor’s degree or an equivalent qualification, through the approved conversion or upgrading process.
This approval comes months after the Federal Government, in April 2026, approved a new unified salary structure and revised Conditions of Service for NiMet staff. That structure took effect on June 1.
The reviewed Scheme of Service is expected to strengthen NiMet’s human resource framework and support its mandate of providing weather and climate information for aviation, agriculture, maritime operations, and disaster risk management.
NiMet also advises the Federal Government on meteorological matters, collects and disseminates weather and climate data, supports research, and works to boost national preparedness for climate-related challenges.
