Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died at the age of 78.
Neill passed away on Monday in Sydney, Australia, according to a statement released by his family, who described his death as “sudden and unexpected.”
The family said the acclaimed actor had recently overcome cancer after years of treatment for lymphoma.
“It is with immense sadness that the whanau of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday, 13 July, in Sydney, Australia,” the statement read, using the Māori word whanau, meaning family.
Although no official cause of death was disclosed, the family confirmed that Neill had been receiving treatment at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.
“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that characterised his whole life,” the statement added.
Tributes have continued to pour in from leaders and admirers across Australia and New Zealand.
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon described Neill as one of the country’s greatest cultural icons, praising his decades-long contribution to the global film industry.
“For more than 50 years, he took New Zealand stories to the world, and his talent helped shape our film industry into one of our greatest cultural exports,” Luxon said.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also honoured the late actor, saying Neill held “a special place in Australian hearts.”
“He faced illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction that defined his remarkable performances. He will be deeply missed and long remembered,” Albanese said.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand as a child and later adopted the name “Sam” instead of his birth name, Nigel John Dermot.
He began his acting career in New Zealand during the early 1970s before rising to international prominence. His breakthrough came in 1993 when he starred as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster Jurassic Park.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Neill appeared in numerous acclaimed films and television series, including The Hunt for Red October, The Piano, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Peaky Blinders, and later installments of the Jurassic Park franchise.
In his 2023 memoir, Neill revealed he had been diagnosed with stage-three non-Hodgkin lymphoma and feared he was nearing the end of his life. However, earlier this year, he announced he was cancer-free following successful genetic immunotherapy.
Outside acting, Neill was also a respected winemaker, operating vineyards in New Zealand’s scenic Central Otago region.
His death marks the end of a distinguished career that left a lasting impact on international cinema and generations of movie lovers worldwide.
