Millions of Americans turned out Saturday to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the country’s independence, even as a punishing heat wave and stark political polarization shaped how the milestone was observed across the nation.

President Donald Trump was scheduled to address crowds on the National Mall ahead of a fireworks display billed as one of the largest in the capital’s history. The president had spent Friday at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, where he delivered a grim assessment of communism as a threat to American liberty, comparing its danger to that of the two World Wars and the September 11 attacks.

Festivities stretched from coast to coast. Chicago prepared to light up the sky over Navy Pier, while New York City combined fireworks with a midnight countdown reminiscent of its New Year’s Eve celebrations. The city also hosted a parade of tall ships sailing past the Statue of Liberty, evoking the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The vessels were trailed by a display of military airpower, including a stealth bomber, the Navy’s Blue Angels, and France’s Patrouille de France aerobatic team, whose colored smoke trails traced the outline of the American flag over New York Harbor.

The mood was complicated by extreme temperatures gripping much of the East Coast. In Washington, organizers canceled a rodeo and the city’s main Independence Day parade because of the heat, though a smaller procession went ahead in the Capitol Hill neighborhood as spectators clustered under trees for shade. An extreme heat warning was in effect for the district, with heat index values expected to near 115 degrees Fahrenheit. Separately, dozens of masked members of the white nationalist group Patriot Front marched through the city carrying Confederate flags; police reported no arrests. Triple-digit heat was forecast from the Southeast up through New England, though forecasters expected thunderstorms to bring some relief later in the day.

In Philadelphia, fireworks began cracking over the city at midday near the site where the Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776. Crowds gathered at Independence Hall despite the heat, with celebrations overlapping a World Cup knockout match between France and Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium. Ahead of another World Cup match in Houston, astronauts aboard the International Space Station sent a message marking the holiday that was broadcast inside the stadium.

At George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Virginia, a new class of immigrants took the Oath of Allegiance to become U.S. citizens, among them a twice-deployed Marine sergeant originally from Guinea. On New York’s Coney Island, Joey Chestnut reclaimed his title at the Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest, consuming 66 hot dogs and buns in ten minutes for his 18th win in 21 appearances, while Miki Sudo retained the women’s title. Both competitors said the heat made the contest tougher than usual.

Beneath the celebration, the anniversary unfolded against a backdrop of sharpening political division. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani appeared to take an indirect swipe at the president, arguing that the nation’s founding ideals could outlast any authoritarian turn, but only if Americans actively upheld them. Vice President JD Vance, speaking aboard the USS Kearsarge in New York Harbor, pushed back against critics who he said preferred to dwell on the country’s flaws rather than its achievements.
