The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, has declared Thursday, July 16, 2026, as the first day of Safar 1448AH after the new crescent moon was not sighted across Nigeria.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by Sambo Wali Junaidu, Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, following a review of moon sighting reports from across the country.
According to the statement, the Sultanate Council, working with the National Moon Sighting Committee, did not receive any verified reports confirming the sighting of the Safar crescent on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, which corresponded with the 29th day of Muharram 1448AH.
As a result, Muharram will complete its full 30-day cycle in line with Islamic tradition and lunar calendar calculations. Consequently, Wednesday, July 15, will be observed as the final day of Muharram, while Thursday, July 16, marks the beginning of Safar, the second month of the Islamic calendar.
The Sultan’s declaration follows the long-established Islamic practice of determining the start and end of lunar months through authenticated moon sightings.
The Sultanate Council reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and strict adherence to Islamic principles in the moon-sighting process, stressing that only credible and verified reports are considered before official announcements are made.
The council also commended members of the National Moon Sighting Committee and volunteers nationwide for their efforts during the moon sighting exercise.
With the commencement of Safar 1448AH, Muslim faithful across Nigeria are expected to continue their religious obligations and spiritual activities in accordance with Islamic teachings.
The Sultan also prayed for lasting peace, unity and progress in Nigeria, urging Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith, promote harmony and contribute positively to national development.
