Kenya has confirmed its second Ebola death, after a 65-year-old woman succumbed to the disease while receiving treatment in Nairobi.
The Ministry of Health announced on Friday, October 23, that the woman was the third confirmed case of Bundibugyo virus disease, a strain of Ebola.
The ministry said she was a close relative and direct contact of Kenya’s index patient, a man who died on October 5 after travelling from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) through Uganda.
She developed symptoms on October 13 while in quarantine and was moved to an infectious disease unit, where she was placed on supportive care until she died.
Health Director-General Patrick Amoth said the medical team did all they could to save her life.
With her death, Kenya has recorded two fatalities out of nine confirmed cases. Seven patients are currently being treated at two isolation facilities.
The ministry stated that all confirmed cases are linked to a single cluster of known contacts, with no evidence of community transmission so far.
Authorities have traced 135 contacts connected to the outbreak and placed them under quarantine to curb further spread.
The ministry added that it is working with the woman’s family to organise a safe and dignified burial in line with public health protocols.
The development comes as the Bundibugyo virus outbreak continues to affect several African countries. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has urged countries to strengthen surveillance, contact tracing and preparedness, while advising against travel or trade restrictions on affected countries.
