Abia Lawmakers Face Probe Demand Over ₦32bn 'Phantom Projects' Scandal

A civil society organization, the Abia Patriots, has demanded investigations into federal legislators representing Abia State following allegations of widespread project fraud totaling ₦32.2 billion.

The call comes after public accountability group Tracka revealed that approximately one-fifth of all abandoned federal constituency projects across Nigeria—despite being fully funded—are concentrated in Abia State.

In a statement released Friday, the Abia Patriots described the findings as alarming, accusing the state’s National Assembly members of oversight failures and possible complicity in what they termed “legislative fraud.”

Tracka’s investigation identified numerous “phantom projects” in Abia—initiatives that received full government funding but have no physical presence or identifiable location.

“Funds were completely disbursed, yet these projects simply don’t exist,” the group stated, calling the situation a betrayal of public trust.

The organization has petitioned both the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to launch formal investigations.

The Abia Patriots singled out senior lawmakers, including Deputy Speaker Hon. Ben Kalu, questioning their role in monitoring project implementation.

“Our representatives, particularly those in leadership positions, have a responsibility to ensure constituency projects actually serve constituents,” the statement emphasized.

The group criticized what it called systematic negligence by elected officials, noting that abandoned infrastructure projects have deprived communities of essential services and development.

“Lawmakers have a constitutional obligation to safeguard public resources. Instead, they’ve ignored the wholesale misappropriation of funds meant to improve citizens’ lives,” the organization stated.

Beyond demanding explanations from implicated legislators, the Abia Patriots announced plans to conduct independent investigations into the irregularities and warned of potential recall efforts against lawmakers found responsible.

“We’re committed to uncovering the truth behind this legislative fraud. Those accountable will face consequences, including possible removal from the National Assembly,” the group declared.
