An Iyaganku Magistrate’s Court in Ibadan on Monday sentenced an 18-year-old bricklayer, Yusuf Idowu, to six strokes of the cane for stealing cocoa pods from an uncompleted building.
Idowu pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and stealing before Magistrate Mrs Gladys Oladele, who considered his young age when determining the sentence.
The magistrate explained that the court took into account the convict’s future, choosing a punishment that would not negatively impact his life ahead.
“He is to be given six strokes of the cane and be discharged immediately, having been adequately cautioned by the court,” Oladele ruled.
Prosecutor Inspector Samuel Owolabi told the court that Idowu committed the crime on January 9, 2026, at about 5:30 p.m. in the Ido area of Ibadan.
The defendant unlawfully entered the farm of Mr Gbenga Motolani and stole cocoa pods worth ₦300,000.
The offence violated Sections 81 and 390(9) of the Criminal Laws of Oyo State, 2000, according to the prosecutor.
