Human rights advocates and public interest lawyers, J.J. Iyieke & Co., have petitioned the Inspector-General of Police and the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Delta State over the alleged murder of 21-year-old Abibatu Favour Aruwa, a final-year law student of the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT).
The law firm, in separate petitions dated July 24 and July 27, 2026, described the killing as deliberate and premeditated, calling on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the case is prosecuted without delay.
According to the petitions, Aruwa travelled from Choba in Rivers State to Warri, Delta State, on June 23 to visit Adedamola Michael Oyewole at his residence in the Edjeba area of Warri.
The lawyers alleged that an argument broke out between the two, during which Oyewole reportedly stabbed Aruwa repeatedly.
The petition stated that the landlord raised an alarm on June 24, prompting police officers to visit the residence, where Aruwa was allegedly found lying in a pool of blood. She was later taken to the General Hospital, Warri, where she was pronounced dead.
An autopsy reportedly carried out at the hospital allegedly found 58 stab wounds on different parts of her body, including her neck, stomach and thighs.
The law firm further claimed that preliminary police investigations suggested the disagreement may have followed Aruwa’s alleged discovery that Oyewole, who had reportedly proposed to her, was already married.
Oyewole has reportedly been arrested and is currently in the custody of the Delta State Police Command as investigations continue.
J.J. Iyieke & Co., acting for the deceased’s family and concerned members of the public, urged the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the investigation is conducted transparently and thoroughly.
The lawyers also called on the Delta State Ministry of Justice to take over the prosecution, arguing that the move would help prevent any possible compromise of the case.
They asked the state Attorney-General to assign a senior counsel to personally oversee the matter and ensure that appropriate charges are filed promptly before a competent court.
The petitioners also stressed the need to preserve key evidence, including the autopsy report, witness statements and the alleged weapon used in the attack.
They described Aruwa’s death as a devastating loss, noting that she was a 500-level law student who was only weeks away from completing her university education.
The lawyers said the alleged killing has sparked outrage among law students, members of the legal profession and other Nigerians, insisting that the matter deserves urgent attention.
They called on the authorities to ensure that those responsible face the full weight of the law and that justice is delivered to Aruwa’s family and the wider society.
