The management of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, has disclosed that over 10,000 “Go Cashless” cards have been issued since the enforcement of the new cashless toll payment policy.
The Airport Manager, Mr Ahmed Danjuma, revealed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.
Danjuma explained that the traffic congestion recorded on Monday and in the early hours of Tuesday at the airport toll gate followed the full rollout of the Federal Government’s cashless toll initiative across the country.
Although registration for the FAAN-issued cards began in August 2025, he noted that many airport users delayed compliance despite several awareness campaigns by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN).
“From March 1, we fully transitioned to cashless operations in line with the Federal Government’s directive to eliminate cash transactions at toll gates,” he said. “The reform is part of broader measures aimed at boosting transparency and improving revenue collection, which previous administrations struggled to implement effectively.”
He added that motorists are now required to obtain FAAN access cards, which allow seamless entry by tapping at designated gates.
“We have consistently informed airport users to get their FAAN cards. Once you get to the gate, you simply tap and the barrier opens. Anyone attempting to pay with cash will not be allowed through,” Danjuma stressed.
Some airport users who spoke on the development commended the government’s move, describing it as a step toward improving service delivery and enhancing revenue generation.
They expressed optimism that the reform would strengthen Nigeria’s aviation sector and align it with global best practices. However, they urged authorities to ensure that funds generated from the initiative are invested in upgrading infrastructure at airports nationwide.
