A recent security advisory by the United States has renewed focus on safety concerns in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, and the broader national security environment.
Weeks ago, the U.S. Department of State approved the departure of non-essential government staff and their families from its embassy in Abuja, citing worsening security conditions across Nigeria. In a follow-up travel advisory issued on April 8, 2026, American citizens were urged to reconsider travelling to the country due to risks such as crime, terrorism, kidnapping, and civil unrest.
Nigeria remains under a “Level 3: Reconsider Travel” classification, while several states fall under the stricter “Level 4: Do Not Travel” category. Plateau, Jigawa, Kwara, Niger, and Taraba states were recently added to that list, increasing the total number of high-risk states to 23.
The advisory warned that violent crimes—including armed robbery, carjacking, and kidnapping for ransom—are widespread, with foreigners often targeted. It also highlighted the risk of terrorist attacks in public spaces such as markets, religious centres, hotels, and large gatherings, alongside concerns about inconsistent healthcare services.
Although no specific incident was referenced, the warning reflects growing unease over security developments, including in the Federal Capital Territory.
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi described the U.S. move as a troubling signal, urging authorities to treat it as a national emergency, particularly given Nigeria’s efforts to attract foreign investment.
Activist Omoyele Sowore also reacted, questioning whether undisclosed threats might be imminent.
In response, the Federal Government downplayed the advisory. Information Minister Mohammed Idris characterised it as a routine precaution based on internal U.S. protocols, insisting that Nigeria remains largely stable despite isolated security challenges.
However, recent developments suggest that concerns are not entirely unfounded. In March, residents of Kungaboku and neighbouring Paze communities reportedly fled after suspected bandits issued threats of coordinated attacks.
Additionally, an internal memo from the Nigeria Customs Service revealed heightened alert levels over a potential attack by Islamist militants targeting key infrastructure in Abuja and nearby Niger State. Possible targets reportedly include the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, a correctional facility, and a military detention centre, with fears that attackers could attempt to free detained militants and damage aviation infrastructure.
Security agencies have also intensified operations within the capital. The Federal Capital Territory Police Command recently announced the arrest of 14 suspected members of a car theft and robbery syndicate, recovering 17 stolen vehicles during operations conducted since March.
The U.S. advisory is not an isolated case. Over the years, countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have issued similar warnings, frequently citing terrorism, violent crime, and civil unrest. Abuja, as Nigeria’s political hub, often features prominently in these alerts due to its symbolic and strategic importance.
Security analyst Tanwa Ashiru noted that such advisories typically signal heightened caution rather than imminent danger. He explained that the U.S. often adopts a “better safe than sorry” approach, acting on risk trends rather than waiting for confirmed threats.
He advised Abuja residents to remain vigilant without panicking, encouraging greater situational awareness and responsiveness to unusual activities.
Ashiru also warned of broader implications, noting that such advisories can affect Nigeria’s economic outlook by discouraging foreign investment and increasing business risks. Diplomatically, they may also strain relations if perceived as a lack of confidence in the country’s security framework.
To address these concerns, he emphasised the need for improved intelligence sharing between Nigeria and its international partners, as well as more visible and proactive policing to rebuild public trust.
Overall, while the U.S. advisory may be precautionary, its timing and recurrence alongside similar warnings continue to shape global perceptions of Nigeria’s security environment, particularly in its capital.
