The Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) has reinstated Nollywood actress Halima Abubakar, ending her suspension that began in October 2024.
Abubakar was indefinitely suspended following defamation allegations against fellow actors and other prominent Nigerians. A two-year investigation by an AGN-appointed panel found her culpable, barring her from guild activities and film projects during the suspension period.
Outgoing AGN National President Emeka Rollas announced the reinstatement during Thursday’s inauguration ceremony for the guild’s new National Executive Council at its Abuja secretariat. The event drew actors from across Nigeria, along with filmmakers and entertainment industry stakeholders.
Rollas, whose second and final term concluded in December 2025, transferred leadership to incoming president Abubakar Yakubu. He used the transition occasion to lift suspensions for Abubakar and other sanctioned members.
“We suspended certain individuals in accordance with AGN regulations, but as I leave office, I don’t want them to remain suspended,” Rollas explained. “Halima Abubakar filed a lawsuit against AGN seeking substantial damages, but following our investigation, we suspended her from acting and all guild activities.”
He emphasized the humanitarian aspect of the decision: “Since acting is her primary livelihood, leaving her suspended would be cruel. Therefore, by the authority vested in me by the Board of Trustees and the entire Actors Guild of Nigeria, I hereby lift Halima Abubakar’s suspension.”
The AGN also lifted suspensions for Christopher Igboji, Chidi Concord, Dan Ewerem, and Jeff Okwute, all members of the guild’s Enugu State chapter.
During his welcome address, Chuks Chyke, chairman of the inauguration organizing committee, praised Rollas for his courageous and inclusive leadership that stabilized the organization. “Your achievements will remain part of the legacy we continue building,” he said.
Chyke congratulated the incoming president and executive team, urging them to view their positions as a sacred trust requiring inclusive and visionary leadership. He called the inauguration “a historical moment” demonstrating the guild’s institutional strength, procedural maturity, and unity.
The chairman encouraged AGN members nationwide to support the new leadership in building a stronger, more unified, and internationally respected organization.
