It’s not even a function of age. You can be very young and still be a sucker for rabid reading, during which you must have come across an institution called Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Who in their right senses even puts Fela and Wizkid in the same sentence?
Can you listen to this music playing up there and see what a class performance is? World standard. Class act! Or have you read or seen anywhere that fela sang along with his songs being played at a show people paid to watch? It was always a live show – one in which you would see everything music – Afrobeats – rolled into one.
His music was and is original. He sold and still sells critical messages to the ruling elite, the ordinary people and even corporations the worldover, the type that resonates with everyone across the continent of Africa, and beyond.
A man who gave live performances throughout his lifetime is being compared to who again? Do you know the efforts that go into such? I once watched Fela play at the then Lekki Beach in the early 90s and that experience remains with me forever.
It was not just value for money. I saw a man, who paid attention to the details of his craft and balanced it with the satisfaction of the audience. I was awestruck. Fela was peerless. No one is close to him. He was indeed music. He played practically all instruments available at his time. He was an abami eda. Truly!
How did we even get here? Comparing Fela to Wizzy? Is this also part of the decline in the value system? I feel terribly violated reading such drivel.
