Adamawa State Governor Umaru Fintiri has crossed the aisle, officially leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC) taking his entire cabinet, political appointees, and elected local government chairmen along with him.
The governor made the declaration in a state broadcast on Friday, framing the move as one driven by the best interests of Adamawa’s people and the broader goal of national unity. He stressed the need for closer alignment with the Federal Government to unlock development opportunities for the state.
The defection did not come as a complete surprise. Earlier in the week, Adamawa House of Assembly Speaker Wesley Bathiya had already signaled the shift, stepping down from PDP membership on Wednesday alongside 14 fellow lawmakers. During plenary, the Speaker read out resignation letters one by one before the chamber concluded its legislative business for the day.
Among the departing lawmakers, House Committee on Information Chairman Mahmud Kallamu called the move a calculated and strategic decision. An APC member who spoke on the sidelines indicated the party was prepared to receive the new entrants with open arms.
The mass defection marks a significant political realignment in Adamawa State, further weakening the PDP’s hold on one of its formerly strong northern bases.
