Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has stepped down from his position in the cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a resignation letter dated April 22, 2026, and addressed to the President through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Adelabu disclosed that his exit will take effect from April 30, 2026.
The former minister explained that his decision is driven by his intention to focus fully on his long-standing ambition to contest the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State. He noted that this political goal dates back to 2016 and influenced his earlier career decisions, including his resignation as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria in 2018.
Adelabu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, acknowledging the trust placed in him to contribute to reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. He added that his resignation is designed to ensure a smooth transition and aligns with the provisions of the amended Electoral Act 2026.
His exit comes weeks after he publicly apologised to Nigerians over persistent nationwide power outages. Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, Adelabu described the disruptions as temporary but admitted they had imposed significant hardship on citizens and businesses.
He assured that corrective measures are underway and promised noticeable improvements in electricity supply in the near future, particularly as demand rises during the dry season.
