Nigerian football has been plunged into mourning following the passing of former Super Eagles midfielder Henry Nwosu, who died in the early hours of Saturday, March 14, 2026. He was 62.
The news was broken by his former teammate Segun Odegbami — himself a hero of Nigeria’s golden generation — who revealed that Nwosu had spent five days fighting for his life in the intensive care unit of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital in Ikeja before succumbing at 4:00 am.
“It is with deep pain in my heart that I have to be the conveyor of the news of the death of Henry Nwosu MON,” Odegbami wrote, affectionately referring to his late colleague as the “Youngest Millionaire.”
Nwosu earned that nickname in part through his status as the youngest member of Nigeria’s historic 1980 Africa Cup of Nations squad — the team that delivered the country’s first continental title on home soil. Known for his sharp vision, creativity, and elegant technique in the middle of the park, he was widely regarded as one of the most gifted midfielders of his era.
After hanging up his boots, Nwosu stayed close to the game he loved, dedicating himself to coaching and mentoring the next generation of Nigerian footballers.
His death arrives just days after another painful loss for Nigerian football. Former Super Eagles head coach Adegboye Onigbinde, who steered Nigeria to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and South Korea, passed away on March 9 at the age of 88. Onigbinde had served as national team coach between 1982 and 1984 — an era in which Nwosu was also a key figure in the Green Eagles setup.
The back-to-back losses have cast a long shadow over Nigerian football, as the country bids farewell to two pillars of its proudest footballing chapter.
