The Chairman of Aniocha North Local Government Area in Delta State, Hon. Emma Bazim Chinye, is currently being held by the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja. His detention, which began on Thursday, May 23, 2025, is in connection with the alleged murder of Mr. Osordi Kingsley Ogugua during a violent attack in Onicha Olona.
According to a petition submitted to the Inspector General of Police by S. Kelechi Nnadi & Co., acting on behalf of Chief Jerry Nkeweshe and Mr. Felix Asuku, the incident occurred while SIU officers and community stakeholders were inspecting the ruins of buildings recently razed by suspected political thugs. The attackers, said to be heavily armed, ambushed the group during the inspection, killing Ogugua and leaving others, including police officers, narrowly escaping with their lives.
The petition alleges that the attackers were backed by Hon. Emma Chinye, and it specifically names Mr. Ngozi Okafor, a known gang leader, as the individual who pulled the trigger. Okafor is said to have a history of criminal activity and is reportedly under the political protection of Chinye.
Furthermore, the petition accused the Delta State Commissioner of Police of obstructing the investigation, alleging that he ordered the release of a prime suspect, Mr. Paul Okwusindi, who had been previously marked for prosecution over terrorism, arson, and attempted murder charges. It also claimed attempts have been made to manipulate the investigation, including pressuring officers to falsely implicate Chief Jerry Nkeweshe in the violent incident that claimed his brother’s life.
Hon. Chinye, now in custody, is expected to face further questioning as investigators continue to gather evidence. As at the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Police Force had not released an official statement on the matter. However, sources within the SIU confirmed that Hon. Chinye remains detained while the probe continues.
The petitioners are demanding that all suspects be re-arrested, re-prosecuted, and that Hon. Chinye be compelled to present those previously granted bail through his political influence.
