Anthony Joshua fought back from two early knockdowns to defeat Kristian Prenga in the second round of their heavyweight contest on Sunday, securing the 30th victory of his professional career. However, the performance has reignited discussions about whether the former unified world heavyweight champion is nearing the end of his time at the highest level.
Although Joshua emerged victorious, his display raised concerns about his ability to compete against the elite fighters currently dominating the heavyweight division.
The British boxer struggled in the opening round, appearing cautious and frequently resorting to clinching after being put under pressure by Prenga. While he recovered impressively to stop his opponent in the second round, observers noted that his trademark speed, explosiveness, and confidence were not as evident as in previous years.
Recent heavyweight contests have highlighted the demanding standards of the division. Daniel Dubois’ gruelling battle with Fabio Wardley and Moses Itauma’s convincing performance against Jermaine Franklin showcased the combination of power, endurance, technical skill, and resilience now expected at the top level.
Joshua’s latest outing has been compared against those performances, with some suggesting the heavyweight landscape is gradually shifting toward a younger generation of fighters.
Questions have also been raised about other established stars. Tyson Fury’s recent outing against Mariusz Wach was viewed as less convincing than expected, while Oleksandr Usyk’s performance against Rico Verhoeven also prompted speculation about whether the division’s leading veterans are beginning to slow down.

His new coaching setup, reportedly involving Oleksandr Usyk, also attracted attention, with the Ukrainian seen praying with a rosary as Joshua battled through adversity inside the ring.
Nevertheless, many believe that courage alone may no longer be enough against the division’s best fighters. Analysts argue that had Joshua faced a more clinical opponent capable of exploiting his defensive lapses, the outcome could have been different.
The victory has also renewed calls for a long-anticipated showdown with Tyson Fury. However, some boxing observers believe Joshua should carefully consider his future before pursuing another blockbuster fight, arguing that Fury still possesses the movement, ring intelligence, and durability needed to compete at the highest level.
While Joshua’s fighting spirit remains unquestioned, his latest performance has intensified debate over whether the former champion should continue his career or retire before further decline sets in.
