The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, has clarified why the party continues to accommodate the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, despite political tensions in the territory.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja after a meeting with party stakeholders, Yilwatda said the APC’s relationship with Wike is rooted in an existing understanding between the ruling party and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
According to him, Wike is operating within the framework of a political arrangement that allowed him to serve in the APC-led administration after securing approval from his party, the PDP.
The APC chairman’s remarks come amid internal disagreements linked to ongoing party congresses in the FCT. He acknowledged growing concerns among founding members of the APC, who have accused defectors from the PDP of attempting to dominate the party’s structure in the territory.
Yilwatda, however, urged long-standing members not to abandon the party due to mounting pressure, emphasizing the need for unity and patience.
He also revealed that more than ₦250 million has been earmarked for ward and state congresses in the FCT, stressing the importance of cohesion as the party prepares for the 2027 general elections.
Calling for inclusiveness, he advised stakeholders to set aside ethnic, religious, and tribal differences, and work together to ensure fair representation in both elective and appointive positions.
“There must be harmony in decision-making, especially in the distribution of positions, to give all members a sense of belonging,” he said, adding that the party’s success depends on unity, tolerance, and shared commitment among its diverse membership.
