Autism Awareness Month: HAEC Advocates Acceptance, Equal Rights for Neurodivergent People

Hope Alive Educational Center (HAEC) has called for greater acceptance, inclusion and protection of the rights of autistic and other neurodivergent people as part of activities marking Autism Awareness Month.

The organisation made the call on Day 2 of its awareness campaign, themed “The Right to Be Different,” stressing that differences in how people think, communicate, learn and experience the world should not be treated as defects.

HAEC explained that neurodivergence refers to differences in the way a person’s brain processes information, learns, communicates and responds to the environment.

It described autism as a neurodevelopmental difference that may affect communication, social interaction, sensory processing, behaviour and the way an individual experiences the world.

The organisation also challenged misconceptions about autism, stressing that it is not a curse, a result of bad parenting or a reflection of a person’s intelligence.

According to HAEC, autism should also never be a basis for shame, exclusion, ridicule or discrimination, while emphasising that an autistic person’s condition does not define their entire identity.

The organisation said every neurodivergent person deserves dignity, acceptance, access to education, participation in society, reasonable support and equal protection under the law.

“Different is not defective. Different is not less. Different is human,” the organisation stated.

HAEC further urged society to move beyond efforts to make everyone the same, advocating instead for communities where people with different abilities and ways of experiencing the world can belong and participate fully.

The organisation described its campaign as part of its broader commitment to human rights, awareness, advocacy and inclusion under its slogan, “Emancipation through Education.”

HAEC encouraged members of the public seeking more information and support to learn about autism and caregiver education through the Autism Caregiver Training Institute.
