The Benjamin Kalu Foundation, led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, joined forces with Vision Saver Eye Care Limited, under the guidance of Dr. Kamal Umar, to kickstart a National Action Against Blindness Project. The initiative began with a three-day medical outreach in the Bende federal constituency of Abia State.
Between October 13 and 15, 2023, the foundations conducted this outreach in the Bende local government area. According to a statement issued by Udora Orizu, the Special Assistant to the Deputy Speaker on Press Affairs, the primary objective of this outreach was to offer free eye care services, medical treatment, and other essential medical services to the constituents.
This significant endeavor drew a substantial turnout of community members seeking assistance with eye-related medical issues. Over 1,200 individuals received medications, medical eyeglasses, and cataract surgeries.
A dedicated team of highly skilled opticians, doctors, and medical professionals worked tirelessly to ensure that each patient received the necessary treatment and care.
During a progress report presentation, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu emphasized that the project extended beyond Bende Federal Constituency; it was designed to benefit the entire nation. He commended the collaborative effort, expressing his pride in the Vision Savers team’s efficiency and impact. Kalu also pledged ongoing support for the initiative and promised to make it one of his constituency projects.
Kalu’s commitment was not limited to this project; he discussed plans to address various health issues affecting his constituents, including dental care and the management of malaria and other health concerns. He pledged to expand the reach of this initiative to other regions, expressing his dedication to serving the needs of all Nigerians.
