The Lagos State branch of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has ended its strike action after the State House of Assembly stepped in to broker a resolution between the union and the state government.
In a statement signed by JOHESU Lagos branch Secretary Kabiawu Gbolahan, the union announced the immediate suspension of the industrial action, directing all members to return to work without delay. The decision followed extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC). Central to the breakthrough was the House of Assembly’s firm assurance that all grievances raised by the union would be given favorable consideration.
Gbolahan also made clear that no union member should face victimization over their participation in the strike, describing this protection as a guarantee underscored by the legislature.
The state government, in a separate statement, confirmed that both sides had found common ground following a high-level meeting convened to address the root causes of the dispute. Officials said the talks were frank and productive, with government reaffirming its commitment to resolving the union’s outstanding demands within established regulatory frameworks, including specific timelines for implementation.
Both parties agreed to keep communication channels open and sustain dialogue to ensure the agreed resolutions translate into tangible outcomes. The government also acknowledged the critical role allied health professionals play in the state’s healthcare system, pledging equitable treatment and improved working conditions going forward.
Lagos residents, who endured disruptions to healthcare services during the strike, were thanked for their patience, as the government reassured the public of its commitment to uninterrupted, quality healthcare delivery across the state.
