The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially begun the bidding process for the hosting rights of the 2028, 2032 and 2036 editions of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), inviting all 54 of its Member Associations to submit proposals to stage the continent’s biggest football competition.
CAF announced the development in a statement published on its official website, marking the formal start of the race to host three future editions of its flagship tournament over the next decade.
According to the continental football governing body, every one of its 54 Member Associations is eligible to participate in the bidding process. The successful hosts will be expected to demonstrate the capacity to organise world-class tournaments that satisfy CAF’s technical, commercial and operational requirements.
CAF explained that the bidding framework was developed with the assistance of global professional services firm PwC, acting as its independent expert adviser, alongside technical, financial and external legal consultants. The governing body noted that the framework is intended to guarantee a transparent, fair and competitive selection process for all interested nations.
The announcement comes as preparations continue for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027, the tournament will mark the first time AFCON will be staged across the three East African countries.
In recent years, CAF has continued to expand the profile and commercial value of the competition, with the tournament attracting increasing sponsorship, record-breaking television audiences and significant engagement across digital platforms.
Widely regarded as Africa’s premier football event, the Africa Cup of Nations has grown into one of the most-watched sporting competitions globally. According to CAF, the tournament reaches a cumulative worldwide television audience of more than 3.2 billion viewers while generating over six billion digital views across various online platforms.
