A political figure identified as Coker has reportedly distributed 10,000 shares in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals to members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that has drawn attention amid the ongoing public offering of shares in the refinery.

The reported distribution comes as the Dangote Refinery’s Initial Public Offering (IPO) continues to attract investors across Nigeria and beyond.

The refinery’s public offer comprises 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 per share. The minimum subscription is 10 shares, valued at ₦5,250, while the offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026. The Nigerian Exchange Group confirmed that the offer is open to retail, institutional and eligible African investors.

At the ₦525 offer price, 10,000 Dangote Refinery shares have a nominal subscription value of ₦5.25 million. This means that if the reported 10,000 shares were indeed provided free of charge to beneficiaries, the value of the shares at the IPO price would be approximately ₦5.25 million.

The reported giveaway is therefore significant because the Dangote Refinery share offer is one of the largest equity offerings in Nigeria’s capital-market history, with the full 4.1 billion-share offer capable of raising approximately ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed.

Dangote Refinery opens ownership to the public

The Dangote Refinery IPO formally opened on September 14, 2026, following approval of the offer by the relevant capital-market authorities.

The offering represents the first opportunity for members of the public to acquire a direct equity stake in the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals through a public offer.

Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Aliko Dangote, said the objective of the IPO was to broaden ownership and allow ordinary people to participate in the value created by the refinery.

He described the offering as an effort to democratise wealth creation, rather than simply an attempt by the Dangote Group to raise funds.

The company is targeting retail, institutional and eligible African investors, while the offer has a relatively low entry point of 10 shares, allowing people to participate with ₦5,250 at the offer price.

Dangote says small investors will receive priority

Dangote has also said that smaller investors would receive priority during the allocation process.

According to him, investors seeking to subscribe for smaller amounts, such as ₦50,000 or ₦100,000, would be prioritised ahead of large institutional investors seeking substantially larger allocations.

He explained that institutional investors would not necessarily receive everything they applied for, with priority intended to be given to retail investors.

However, subscribing for a particular number of shares does not automatically guarantee that an investor will receive the full number requested, particularly if the offer is oversubscribed.

Dangote projects possible rise in share value

The refinery’s share offer has also generated interest following Dangote’s projection that the shares, currently offered at ₦525, could eventually rise to ₦10,000.

Dangote used the projection to illustrate the potential long-term value of an investment in the refinery, although the projected price is not a guarantee of future market performance.

Once the shares are listed, their market value will be influenced by factors including the refinery’s financial performance, refining margins, investor demand, broader economic conditions and general market sentiment.

Dangote has also said shareholders could potentially receive dividends in either naira or US dollars, subject to the company’s dividend policy and applicable requirements.

Refinery plans further expansion

The public offer is also linked to the refinery’s longer-term expansion plans.

The facility, located in the Lekki Free Zone in Lagos, is designed as a major integrated refining and petrochemical complex. Reports on the IPO indicate that the company intends to expand its refining capacity from its current level to about 1.4 million barrels per day.

The proceeds of the public offering are expected to support the refinery’s long-term growth, operational expansion and strategic investments.

Dangote has said the company is seeking to broaden ownership significantly. In September, he said the group was targeting as many as 10 million shareholders through the IPO, describing the objective as spreading ownership across Nigeria and Africa.

Coker’s reported distribution

Against this background, the reported decision by Coker to distribute 10,000 Dangote Refinery shares to APC members has attracted attention because of the substantial value represented by the shares at the current IPO price.

If the reported figure refers to 10,000 shares in total, those shares would be worth ₦5.25 million at the ₦525 offer price.

If, however, the report means that 10,000 shares were given to each APC member, the total value would depend on the number of beneficiaries and would be considerably higher.

The distinction is important because publicly available sources reviewed for this report did not independently establish the number of individual beneficiaries, the identity of Coker involved, the mechanism through which the shares were allegedly transferred, or whether the shares were actually allotted and registered in the names of the beneficiaries.

The reported giveaway should therefore be understood in the context of the ongoing Dangote Refinery IPO, while the specific details of Coker’s alleged distribution remain subject to confirmation.

The Dangote Refinery share offer is scheduled to remain open until October 13, 2026, after which applications will be processed and investors informed of their allotments in accordance with the terms of the offer.
