Thousands of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members are experiencing financial strain this Christmas following delays in their December allowance payments.
Corps members typically receive their monthly stipends between the 28th and 30th of each month, with variations depending on individual banks. However, many had hoped for early disbursement this month to accommodate holiday expenses and travel plans.
Aisha, a corps member who spoke with THE WHISTLER, explained the impact of the delay. “We were expecting it early this month because of the celebration. Some of us need to travel back to celebrate with our parents and even get new things for the new year,” she said.
The payment delay has forced many to cancel or postpone travel arrangements to visit family during the festive season.
Joseph, another affected corps member, described his frustration: “We can’t join in the festive mood because we don’t have money. We can’t even go out with our friends. I just hope the government resolves the delay soon.”
Social Media Reaction
The issue gained attention when NYSC Director-General Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu posted a Christmas greeting on the organization’s Facebook page, encouraging unity and commitment to national service.
“Christmas is a season of love, peace, unity, and service to humanity, which incidentally, are part of the time-tested values of the NYSC,” the DG wrote. “Let us remain united in our diversity and committed to building a stronger nation together.”
The message prompted numerous responses from corps members expressing concern about celebrating without their allowances.
“Daddy how we go enjoy this Christmas without allowance, reason am na,” commented Godie Damilola.
Akonye Hannah Ayomide questioned, “What is merrying in the Christmas without allowance,” while Jubir Paul added, “So we go do Christmas without allowance? It’s well.”
The federal government has not yet issued a statement regarding the payment delay or when corps members can expect to receive their December allowances.
