A Shari’a Court in Rigasa, Kaduna, on Tuesday ordered the remand of a female spectator whose phone rang during court proceedings.
Presiding Judge Malam Muhammad Adamu ruled that she would face charges for obstructing judicial proceedings.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the woman resisted handing over her phone to court officials after it disrupted the session. She pleaded ignorance, stating it was her first time in court and she only wanted to observe the proceedings.
Despite her explanation, the unidentified woman was remanded, and her phone was confiscated. She repeatedly said, “I didn’t know how the court operates; this is my first time in court.”
NAN noted that signs instructing attendees to switch off their phones were displayed both outside and inside the courtroom. Additionally, a court clerk had earlier reminded everyone to silence or turn off their devices before the session began.
