Popular broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has accused former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, of disrespecting Yoruba culture and the Ibadan people with his “my dear brother” congratulatory message to the newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja. This is coming despite Obi already clarifying his intention by insisting that he never tried to disrespect the throne.
Reacting while speaking during his “So Kan Wa Special” radio programme on Agidigbo FM alongside guests, Hamzat sarcastically faulted Obi’s choice of words to Oba Ladoja, describing it as an affront to Yoruba tradition.
“Yoruba people, Ibadan indigenes, Obi has disrespected you. He called Olubadan, a royal head, my friend,” he said.
According to him, his criticism has nothing to do with Obi’s political ambitions; instead, he is simply defending the dignity of the Olubadan throne.
Hamzat stressed that the Labour Party member should learn from President Bola Tinubu, who avoided casual expressions while addressing the monarch.
He concluded by saying that his remarks are aimed at informing his listeners, not reducing Obi’s votes in 2027.
“The President did not call him my friend, maybe he said brother. Olubadan has now turned to my father.
I am not hindering him from getting votes, I am just informing them,” he added.
