Nigerian pop sensation David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, has opened up about the therapeutic process of creating his latest album, ‘Timeless.’ Released on March 31, 2023, the record marked Davido’s return to the music scene after a personal tragedy—the passing of his son, Ifeanyi, on October 31, 2022.
In a recent interview, the acclaimed artist shared, “I actually recorded most of the album in my house, where I live with my wife. At the time, it was really only me, her, and her sisters, and I had one of my boys staying with me. It gave me time to really calm down. It was a healing process because I was happy to be making music. I was excited about it. I felt like an artiste that had just gotten a record deal.”
Davido revealed that he created a total of 28 songs for the album before carefully selecting the tracks that made the final cut. He emphasized his desire for the album to be appreciated by fans on its own merit rather than gaining support solely due to the personal loss he had endured.
The artist also shared that he found his concentration peak when working on the album during airplane journeys.
Addressing the ‘Are We African Yet’ festival taking place today in Atlanta, United States, Davido expressed his ambition to provide opportunities for various artists to perform annually. He highlighted the hidden fan base that artists can tap into through platforms like TikTok and emphasized the need for Africans to take charge of their cultural representation.
“I feel like we have to own our culture. We cannot wait for somebody else to bring the idea. We have to do this ourselves. The vision I have is to create it to be something for the culture, not particularly mine. The first few editions will hold in Atlanta, but we will definitely move it around to places such as Los Angeles and Toronto (Canada),” Davido explained.
