More political drama is expected in Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber, as Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, has vowed to return to plenary today.
This is coming despite unresolved legal and procedural questions following her controversial suspension.
The lawmaker recently declared in a viral clip that she is set to resume her legislative duties in the Senate on Tuesday, briefly after a Federal High Court ruled her six-month suspension was unconstitutional and excessive.
“I thank you for your support. I am glad we are victorious today. We shall resume in the Senate on Tuesday by the grace of God,” she said to her jubilant supporters.
Despite the court’s decision that ordered her immediate return to her duties as a lawmaker, the Senate leadership has taken a wait-and-see approach.
According to the Senate, no official action will be taken regarding her reinstatement until the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the court judgment is obtained and reviewed.
Reacting via a press statement issued Sunday, Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, reiterated that legal clarity is very key.
He stated that even though Senate lawyers were present at the hearing, the full judgment was not read aloud in court, which prompts the need for a formal application to access the detailed ruling.
“Pending receipt and examination of the CTC, and acting on the advice of counsel, the Senate shall refrain from taking any steps that may prejudice its legal position,” the statement read.
Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan’s return, if it happens, might spark further controversies on the Senate floor, especially because her suspension was initially viewed by critics as politically motivated.
Several civil society groups and human rights advocates have since blasted the Senate’s move to silence a dissenting voice.
Her lawsuit, which challenged the legitimacy of her suspension, has shed more light on parliamentary authority, judicial oversight, and the restriction of free speech in Nigeria’s democratic process.
All eyes are now firmly on today’s plenary. Will Natasha show up as promised? And if she does, will the lawmaker be allowed access to her seat?
