The Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has strongly condemned the killing of a young man by armed attackers near the main gate of the University of Benin (UNIBEN) in Benin City.

The victim was reportedly shot dead in broad daylight on Sunday in what the governor described as a “brazen and cold-blooded” attack, raising renewed concerns over security in the area.

In a statement released through his Chief Press Secretary, Patrick Akhere Ebojele, the governor said the incident represented a serious violation of human dignity and a direct threat to public safety.

He described the killing as unacceptable, stressing that it contradicts the values of his administration and must not go unpunished.

The governor extended condolences to the family, friends, and associates of the deceased, noting that the victim’s life was unjustly cut short.

He assured residents that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, had already launched investigations into the incident and were working to track down those responsible.

According to him, efforts were underway to ensure the perpetrators are arrested and prosecuted, adding that “they may run, but they cannot hide forever.”

Okpebholo also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling cult-related violence and other forms of criminal activity across the state.

He said ongoing security operations, conducted in collaboration with the police, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigerian Army, have already led to arrests and prosecutions of suspected cultists in various communities.

The statement further noted that the government has been engaging traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, and civil society organisations as part of broader efforts to curb cultism and violent crime.

It also highlighted rehabilitation and reintegration programmes aimed at helping vulnerable youths avoid recruitment into cult groups.

Describing the killing as a grim reminder of the work still ahead, the governor urged members of the public with useful information to assist security agencies, assuring that all tips would be treated with strict confidentiality.

“Edo State will not be a sanctuary for criminals,” he declared. “Those who carry arms and terrorise innocent people will face the full weight of the law.”
