The Metropolitan Police have opened a new investigation involving former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, who is currently serving a prison sentence for attempted organ harvesting.
Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, were sentenced on May 5, 2023, after being found guilty of persuading doctors at the Royal Free Hospital in London to perform an £80,000 kidney transplant on a donor falsely presented as their daughter Sonia’s cousin.
On August 23, media personality Chude Jideonwo released the first episode of his docuseries titled “Daniel vs. Ekweremadu — the Battle Over One Man’s Kidney,” which was filmed in both Nigeria and the UK.
In a statement on Wednesday, Jideonwo revealed that the documentary uncovers a new investigation by the London Metropolitan Police connected to Ekweremadu. “The documentary tells the story of Ekweremadu’s fall from Nigerian Deputy Senate President to a British prisoner following his conviction for organ harvesting,” the statement reads.
The docuseries further discloses that the Metropolitan Police are currently investigating another case tied to Ekweremadu. According to an email from Alexandra Meek, the MET Police’s Senior Communications Manager, detectives from the Specialist Crime unit arrested a woman in her 50s on November 8, 2022, on suspicion of conspiracy to exploit for the purposes of organ harvesting. She was released under investigation, and inquiries are ongoing.
The documentary, “Daniel vs. Ekweremadu,” explores Ekweremadu’s conviction under the UK’s Modern Slavery Law, making him the first person sentenced for such a crime. It also includes interviews with British prosecutors, police officers, and the family of the victim-survivor.
Jideonwo explained that “Daniel” is the pseudonym given to the victim-survivor to protect his identity, following a directive from the judge overseeing the case. The series promises exclusive access and insights into the case, shedding new light on Ekweremadu’s legal battles and the ongoing investigation.
