Former England captain and manager Kevin Keegan, one of the most celebrated figures in English football history, has died at the age of 75 following a battle with stage four cancer.
His family confirmed that Keegan passed away seven weeks after publicly revealing his diagnosis. They disclosed that he died peacefully, surrounded by his wife and daughters.
In a statement, the family described the two-time Ballon d’Or winner as a devoted husband, father and grandfather, while expressing gratitude to the medical team that cared for him during his illness. They also appealed for privacy as they mourn his loss.
Keegan’s illness first became public in January after he underwent further medical examinations for persistent abdominal symptoms. In June, he announced that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer, the most advanced stage of the disease.
Widely regarded as one of England’s greatest footballers, Keegan enjoyed a glittering playing career with Scunthorpe United, Liverpool, Hamburg, Southampton and Newcastle United. He later managed Newcastle United, Fulham, England and Manchester City, leaving an enduring mark wherever he served.
During his playing days, Keegan won numerous major honours with Liverpool, including three English league titles, the European Cup, two UEFA Cups and the FA Cup. His success continued in Germany with Hamburg, where he helped the club win the Bundesliga.
He also etched his name into football history by winning the prestigious Ballon d’Or in both 1978 and 1979, making him one of only a handful of English players ever to receive the award.
For England, Keegan earned 63 caps and scored 21 goals between 1972 and 1982 before later taking charge of the national team from 1999 to 2000. He led the Three Lions to Euro 2000 before stepping down following a World Cup qualifying defeat to Germany.
Keegan’s greatest managerial legacy arguably came at Newcastle United, where he transformed the club into one of the most exciting teams in English football. Nicknamed “The Entertainers,” his side thrilled fans during the 1995-96 Premier League season as they challenged for the title.
He also guided Newcastle back to the Premier League after securing promotion in the 1992-93 campaign and later returned for a brief second spell in 2008.
Following the announcement of his death, football clubs, former teammates and public figures paid emotional tributes to the legendary football figure.
Newcastle United described Keegan as one of the most influential and beloved personalities in the club’s history, saying his impact extended far beyond results on the pitch.
Liverpool also honoured their former star, praising his remarkable contribution to the club and noting that his legacy would remain part of the club’s history forever.
Hamburg remembered Keegan as one of football’s defining figures, while Fulham, Scunthorpe United, Manchester City and the Football Association all expressed condolences to his family.
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer wrote: “My hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy, Boss.”
Prince William also paid tribute, describing Keegan as an exceptional footballer and manager whose passion for the game inspired generations.
The Football Association announced that England’s UEFA Nations League match against Spain at Wembley on September 26 will include tributes celebrating Keegan’s remarkable life and contribution to English football.
