Former Nigerian sprint star and Olympic medallist Mary Onyali MFR has been appointed Head of Nigeria Operations by World Wide Scholarships (WWS), a global organisation focused on helping African talents access international opportunities in sports, academics and the arts.
The appointment places one of Nigeria’s most celebrated athletes in a strategic position to support the identification and development of young Nigerian talents seeking opportunities abroad.
WWS, which operates from the United States and South Africa, connects talented African students and athletes with high schools, colleges and universities overseas through sports and academic scholarship programmes.
Onyali’s new role is expected to strengthen the organisation’s activities in Nigeria, particularly its efforts to discover promising athletes and provide them with pathways to combine sporting careers with quality education.
The former sprint champion has remained active in youth development and athletics since retiring from competitive sports. In April 2026, she encouraged young athletes to place equal importance on education and sporting development, noting that academic qualifications are vital for athletes pursuing scholarship opportunities overseas.
Her views closely align with WWS’s mission of “Empowering talent in Africa.” The organisation says it has so far connected more than 1,000 students with educational opportunities.
With Onyali leading its Nigerian operations, WWS plans to expand its talent identification efforts across the country and create more opportunities for Nigerian athletes to gain international scholarships.
The organisation provides opportunities across several sports, including athletics, football, swimming, basketball, rugby and tennis, while also supporting academic and artistic scholarship programmes.
Onyali’s appointment is expected to give fresh momentum to efforts aimed at creating structured pathways for young Nigerians to progress from grassroots sports to international institutions.
Her experience as an elite athlete and advocate for youth development could also help WWS identify and nurture the next generation of Nigerian sporting talents while helping them pursue quality education.
