Nigeria could face a severe humanitarian and economic setback after the United States House of Representatives voted to suspend all American assistance to the country over concerns about alleged killings of Christians and worsening insecurity. Although the proposal has not yet become law, experts say its potential impact could be far-reaching if it receives Senate approval and is signed by President Donald Trump.

Development experts and public health stakeholders warned that a complete suspension of U.S. assistance would threaten critical healthcare programmes, humanitarian operations, education, agriculture, security initiatives, and thousands of jobs supported by donor-funded projects. They stressed that the move exposes Nigeria’s heavy dependence on foreign aid and should serve as a wake-up call for stronger domestic investment.

The amendment, sponsored by Congressman Gregory Steube during deliberations on the Fiscal Year 2027 State Department Appropriations Bill, seeks to halt U.S. assistance to Nigeria until the Secretary of State certifies that the country has taken measurable steps to curb violence and prosecute those responsible. The proposal still requires approval from the U.S. Senate and the President before taking effect.

For more than two decades, Nigeria has been one of the largest beneficiaries of U.S. foreign assistance. American funding has supported HIV/AIDS treatment, tuberculosis control, malaria prevention, immunisation campaigns, maternal and child healthcare, education, agriculture, humanitarian relief, security reforms, and private sector development. Billions of dollars have been invested in healthcare alone, with millions of Nigerians benefiting from life-saving interventions.

Chairman of the Public Health Sustainable Advocacy Initiative, Barrister Ayo Adebusoye, described the House vote as a serious diplomatic warning that should not be ignored. He said the issue extends beyond financial support and reflects growing international concern over insecurity, governance, and accountability in Nigeria.

Adebusoye urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagement with the United States while demonstrating concrete progress in tackling terrorism, kidnappings, and attacks on vulnerable communities. He also called for increased domestic funding of healthcare to reduce dependence on foreign donors.

According to him, any prolonged disruption of U.S. assistance could affect HIV/AIDS treatment, tuberculosis services, malaria control, immunisation programmes, maternal healthcare, nutrition, disease surveillance, and epidemic preparedness, leaving millions of vulnerable Nigerians at risk.

National President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, also warned that ordinary Nigerians would bear the greatest burden if the aid suspension eventually takes effect.

He described the situation as “double jeopardy,” noting that citizens are already suffering from insecurity and could now lose access to essential health and humanitarian services. While acknowledging international concerns over violence in Nigeria, he argued that suspending aid would punish vulnerable people rather than those responsible for governance failures.

Ifeanyi called on the Nigerian government to tackle insecurity more decisively, strengthen governance, fight corruption, and invest more of the country’s own resources in healthcare and development to reduce reliance on foreign assistance.

Both experts agreed that, although the House vote is not yet final, it should prompt Nigeria to improve security, strengthen diplomatic relations with the United States, and build sustainable domestic funding for critical public services.
