FG Begins Kara Bridge Repairs, FRSC Warns Motorists Against Traffic Violations

The Federal Government has commenced the reconstruction of the failed expansion joint on the Kara Bridge, outward Lagos, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, with the project expected to last for two weeks.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) announced that the repair work, which began on Tuesday, July 28, is aimed at improving the safety of motorists and preserving the integrity of the bridge.

In a statement issued by the Lagos Sector Command’s Public Education Officer, SRC Elizabeth Jayeola, the agency described the project as a critical intervention to prevent accidents and enhance road safety on one of the country’s busiest highways.

Lagos Sector Commander, Corps Commander Kehinde Hamzat, explained that the ongoing repairs would require the temporary reduction of the four-lane carriageway to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe working environment for construction personnel.

He acknowledged that the lane reduction would result in traffic congestion and delays, particularly during peak travel periods.

To minimize the impact of the construction, the FRSC appealed to organisations, institutions and businesses that can operate remotely to allow employees to work from home during the two-week repair period.

According to Hamzat, reducing the number of vehicles on the affected corridor would ease traffic pressure and spare commuters the stress of prolonged gridlock.

Motorists were also advised to plan their journeys in advance, avoid travelling during rush hours where possible, and make use of alternative routes such as the Ikorodu-Sagamu Expressway and the Lekki-Epe Expressway.

The Sector Commander urged drivers to remain patient, obey traffic officials, and comply with all traffic management directives throughout the duration of the project.

He also issued a stern warning against driving against traffic, popularly known as one-way driving, stressing that violators would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the National Road Traffic Regulations.

The FRSC disclosed that it has deployed personnel and operational resources in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works, the Ogun State Ministry of Transportation, traffic management agencies and emergency responders to ensure smooth traffic flow and safeguard both road users and construction workers.

The agency appealed for public understanding and cooperation, noting that the temporary inconvenience would ultimately result in a safer and more durable Kara Bridge for all motorists.
