The Federal Government has released N38.93bn to 166 public tertiary institutions across the country under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund.
The beneficiaries are 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education. The money is meant to fund approved projects that address infrastructure gaps and improve teaching and learning facilities.
Universities get the biggest share at N28.5bn, followed by polytechnics with N5.8bn. The colleges of education will receive N4.7bn.
The government said the intervention is part of efforts to meet the needs of public universities and to implement agreed measures under the Memorandum of Understanding between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
It added that the funds will allow the institutions to start or advance approved projects covering critical infrastructure and other identified needs, with the aim of raising the quality of tertiary education in Nigeria.
According to the government, the disbursement highlights the need for effective coordination between the Federal Ministry of Finance, the Federal Ministry of Education and the beneficiary institutions, so that approved public funding translates into real improvements in educational infrastructure and institutional capacity.
